Notes in a Stranger Hand: The Sharper Gloss

Every leaf in the Unbound remembers what it was for, $N, and this one remembers being nothing but a margin, so crowded with disagreement that the disagreement grew taller than the page it argued with. Each limestone tower here was once a single note scratched beside the Bindery's own text, and the ruder the note, the taller its tower stands today. Where two notes agreed, their towers lean together and share a rope bridge; where they never did, a green channel runs between them and the water keeps them apart for good. The jungle came later, growing wherever an old argument had finally gone quiet long enough to root. The Glossator climbed to Notchtop and left a note pinned to the tallest disagreement on the whole leaf, and someone else has since scrawled a shorter, sharper note directly beneath it.
