The Glossator's Gall
es_irongall_columns_sagaThe Glossator's Gall
Quest · Level 46
Iron gall ink is the only ink the Binders ever trusted with a correction that had to last, $N, because rust and oak gall together bite so deep into the page that nothing short of burning the book can undo them. The Glossator knew that better than anyone. Long after the Binders stopped trusting its judgment, it kept writing anyway, mixing its own ink from the rust of a column it had chosen and the galls of an oak it had chosen, so that whatever it wrote could never be scraped off and denied. The columns here still weep that same rust, and the oaks on top of them still knot the same galls, long after the Glossator itself went wherever glossators go when the last page runs out. Somewhere among these steps it is said to have mixed its final batch and written one last line no one has ever found. Search the hollow south of the terrace and see if that line is still there to read.

Completion
So it really did finish the batch, and the line, before it was done with either. Whoever reads that line reads the one correction the Glossator made that no one could ever scrape away. My own stock of galls says the road from here runs north, $N, to Kettlestitch Canyon, where the rock itself is stitched together with old iron seams. Any mainland ferry master will carry you there.
