The Face in the Mirror

Before this leaf was cut, $N, it was the one page bound to show the Book its own reflection: the mirror leaf, the page a copyist held up to check that no line had been written backward, no letter mirrored by a tired hand at the end of a long day. The Binders decided a story should never be allowed to see itself from the outside, so they cut the mirror leaf free and sank it, thinking a drowned page could reflect nothing more. They were wrong. It sank into the crater and pooled into this lake, and every dawn, before the steam rises, it shows the same page it always showed, if you stand at the right shore and do not blink. Someone else learned to stand there before you did, and left their own leaf at Mirrorlake Point: go and see what it still reflects.
