The Page That Fell In
es_lacuna_sinks_sagaThe Page That Fell In
Quest · Level 37
A lacuna, $N, is a gap in a text: a page torn out, a line worn away, a word the copyist simply could not read. This whole island is the Binders' own word for exactly that, cut from the Book and sent here because it kept opening holes in itself faster than any scribe could patch them. I have mapped forty-one sinkholes by name and I do not doubt there are more the scrub has not shown me yet. Out past the scarp there is a stairway cut into a sinkhole wall that simply stops, mid-flight, over open air, as if the mason had been reading and the page ended under his feet. Someone left a leaf of actual paper wedged into the last step, signed only as the Glossator. Walk out to the missing stair and read it before the damp finishes what the gap started.

Completion
So the Glossator stood right where the stair gives out and kept writing anyway, into open air, $N. That is either the bravest thing I have ever heard of or the least practical, and possibly both. They went on from here to Rubric Cone, further along this reach of marginal isles. Take the ferry there and keep reading. I have thirty-nine more sinkholes to map before winter.
