The Letter Written in Fire

Before this leaf was cut, $N, it held the one page of the Book bound in red: the rubric, the line that told every copyist which word came first and which came last. The Binders decided no single page should carry more weight than the story around it, so they cut the rubric out and burned it, thinking a burned page could hold nothing more. They were wrong. The ash rose into a mountain, and the ink boiled down into the glass that lines every vent on this slope, and it is still, after all this time, trying to tell someone which word matters most. I have spent years reading it and I still cannot agree with what it says. Go to the Redglass Vent and read it yourself, and tell me if you see the same word I do.
