The Unread Stroke

Before this leaf was cut, $N, it was not a page at all: it was a single stroke, one minim, waiting to become a letter. The Binders could not agree whether it belonged to an i or a u or an m or an n, and a story cannot be told with a letter that refuses to choose, so they cut the stroke free rather than decide for it. It fell here and shattered into every fin on this ridge, each one still exactly as undecided as the first, each one still waiting to be read as some letter it has not yet chosen to be. I have climbed this ridge for years trying to read even one of them. Go to Cipher’s Ledge and try where I could not.
