The Unerased Trace

Quest · Level 60
Come stand at the Scraped Face a while, $N, where the ice ground everything down to bare stone. This leaf once carried a whole passage the Binders feared too much to merely cut away or shatter; a hole would have confessed something was missing, and scattered pieces might still be found and read again in order. So they grew a glacier over it instead and let the ice do slower, quieter work: grinding the ink away grain by grain until nothing of the passage remained, not even a shape to reassemble. Scraped vellum keeps one thing a cut or a shattering never does, though: the faint pressure of a stylus that wrote hard enough to leave a groove beneath the ink, long after the ink itself is gone. The Glossator found the one stretch of stone the grinding stopped just short of finishing, where meltwater still pools into grooves too shallow to see dry, and just deep enough to hold, for a moment, the shape of what was pressed there.

Completion
You saw it fill and drain, and I will not pretend the shape told me more than a shape can. Whatever the Binders feared that passage could still say, they made sure that even its ghost would only ever show for a moment before draining away again. The trail keeps moving regardless, further south across open water, to Waxtablet Plateau, where they say the stone itself was once soft enough to write on and still remembers every scratch a stylus ever made. No ferry sails that far, $N; only your own boat will carry you there, so set your course south and go. If the wax still holds a mark, come back and tell an old scholar what it says.
