Notes in a Stranger Hand: The Whetted Edge
es_penknife_fjords_sagaNotes in a Stranger Hand: The Whetted Edge
Quest · Level 40
Every leaf in the Unbound remembers what it was for, $N, and this one remembers being a tool rather than a text. It was the Binders' own penknife, the small blade that trimmed every other leaf to size before binding, and when its edge finally wore past sharpening, they cut it loose rather than keep a dull thing in a book about keeping things sharp. So it drifted here and kept doing the only thing it knew: cutting. The fjords are its strokes, drawn against the black cliffs the way a whetstone draws an edge, over and over, forever almost sharp again. The Glossator left a note at Blacknib Point, right where the blade's own point would be, and someone else has scratched a single line beneath it since, in a hand too steady to be kind.

Completion
The second hand again, steadier than I like. Under the Glossary's note it reads only: "some tools are not meant to stop." I do not know if that is a warning or a compliment. Their trail bends on to Sandarac Dunes next, $N, north of here along the marginal isles. Have Joran ring the ferry bell for you: it carries you back to the mainland docks, and the ferry masters there sail on to Sandarac Dunes.
