The Omened Leaf

Quest · Level 60

Stand inside the arch with me, $N, and wait for the fog to pour through before I tell you what these bones remember being. Before the Book was bound, this leaf held a private omen for every single reader: turn to it, and it told you, plainly, the manner and season of your own end. The Binders judged that knowing your own ending changes nothing and everything at once, and a book that paralyzed every reader who opened it could never be read at all, so they cut the leaf away and let the Ink Tide carry it east. It ran aground as these arches, ribs of a leviathan that was never quite a leviathan, and the fog still pours the same trick through them at dusk: stand inside any arch and for one breath you see the shape of an ending, though never quite your own, never quite anyone's. The Glossator walked through every arch on this coast and swears the last one, farthest down the shore, shows the same shape to whoever stands in it, over and over, as if that one omen belongs to no one in particular and everyone at once. Go stand in it and see for yourself.

Completion

"[the shape, whatever it was]" is as much as the Glossator ever put into words about that last arch, and reading it themselves clearly cost them nothing they were willing to write down. Thank you for standing where I no longer can, $N; my knees do not forgive the walk to that arch twice in one season. Beneath the shape, the Glossator names the next leaf on the trail anyway: south of us, past the last arch's own curve, stands Recension Ridge, where they say the stone itself has been rebuilt from older stone so many times that no one agrees which ridge is the true one. Take your own boat south and see which ridge they mean. Come back one day, if the fog ever lets you leave twice, and tell an old reader of omens whether a rebuilt ridge remembers its first shape at all.
