The Buried Drafts
es_recension_ridge_sagaThe Buried Drafts
Quest · Level 60
Sit a moment on the stone, $N, and let me show you what I have pieced together. Before the Book was bound, this leaf was not lost, it was worked, over and over, by Binders who could not agree on what it should say. Each time they revised it they did not cross out the old draft, they buried it, and let the Ink Tide carry every discarded layer east until it hardened into stone, one stacked saddle at a time, each a different Binder's hand in a different season. I have spent three years reading this ridge the way I would read a manuscript, latest hand on top, oldest hand buried deepest, and I believe the very first draft, the one nobody agreed to keep, still lies bared at the ridge's southern tip, where the stone finally runs out. The Glossator climbed down to it before me and swore it was the oldest hand on the whole spine. Go and read what the Binders decided was not worth revising a second time.

Completion
"[the first hand, before revision]" is carved plain at the Bared Spine, $N, five words that never survived a single correction, because the Binders buried the whole draft rather than let anyone read what it used to say. The Glossator noted the same five words in their own hand, and guessed the later drafts only made the leaf safer, never truer. Thank you for reading it to me; the wind up there argues too loudly for an old archivist to make the climb twice. The trail runs on north from here, past the open water, to Vellum Crater, where they say the sea itself steams inside an old wound in the rock. Take your own boat north and see what draft the Binders buried there. Come back and tell me whether a crater keeps its drafts as carefully as a ridge does.
