The Margin Calls: An Argument in Two Hands

Quest · Level 17

Recto and Verso was never one leaf, $N. It was the argument written on both faces of it: a scribe's careful hand on one side, and on the other, a corrector who disagreed with nearly every line and said so in the margins. Two writers who could never be bound face to face without one drowning out the other, so the Binders cut the leaf whole and let both sides keep arguing to no one but the wind. It drifted east and settled here unfolded, one face tilted up to the sun and the other down into shadow, exactly as the scribe and the corrector once sat across a table from each other. A wanderer called the Glossator climbed to the fold between them and left a note at the one place both faces can be read side by side, agreeing on nothing except that someone had finally come to referee.

Completion

The Glossator went south from here, $N, toward Foxing Isle, chasing whatever stain has been spreading across that leaf for years. Have Dain ring the bell for you: the ferry takes you back to the mainland docks, and the ferry masters there sail on to Foxing Isle. Follow the trail, and tell Wren the argument she has been refereeing is older than she thinks, and still has no winner.
