Notes in a Stranger Hand: The Second Hand
es_sepia_needles_sagaNotes in a Stranger Hand: The Second Hand
Quest · Level 34
This leaf was never a story, $N, it was a margin, a strip of commentary written beside some grander page the Binders kept. Whoever wrote here disagreed with the text so completely that the argument outlived the argument: the ink hardened into these ranked, pointed needles, one for every objection they refused to let go. The Glossator read this leaf and left their usual note, hopeful as always. But somebody else has been writing back. A second hand, sharper than the Glossator's, has been adding its own lines beside the Glossator's own, down at the Blotted Line. Go and read both hands side by side, and tell me if you can say which one sounds more like the truth.

Completion
Two hands, and now I cannot stop seeing the difference. The Glossator's line is generous. The second hand is not, and it is smarter than I would like. Both trails bend on to Swash Arches next, $N, south of here along the marginal isles, where the sea keeps arguing with the rock the same way. Have Rurik ring the ferry bell for you: it carries you back to the mainland docks, and the ferry masters there sail on to Swash Arches.
