The Margin Calls: The Almanac's Leaf
es_watermark_sands_sagaThe Margin Calls: The Almanac's Leaf
Quest · Level 9
Watermark Sands was never bound for long, $N. It was a leaf of the Almanac, the tide-tables and cockle recipes fishermen rewrote every season, the kind of practical page the Binders never meant to keep past its year. When the next year's almanac was drafted, the old leaf was cut loose rather than crowd the shelf, and it drifted east on the Ink Tide to run aground here, still carrying the papermaker's own watermark pressed into its corner, the mark that named which bindery a leaf belonged to. The tide found that mark and has been un-erasing and re-erasing it every day since, the way it once erased and rewrote a season's notes. A wanderer they call the Glossator waded out at the lowest ebb and left their own note where the causeway runs, reading the mark the way only a Binder's eye could.

Completion
So that is what the crest has been saying all along: not a message, but a maker's mark, the same one every discarded almanac leaf carries somewhere in its corner. The Glossator went south from here, $N, following the tide down toward Tittle Isle to read whatever that leaf remembers. Have Bram ring the bell for you: the ferry takes you back to the mainland docks, and the ferry masters there sail on to Tittle Isle. Follow the trail, and tell Senna, when you see her, that I finally know what she has been rubbing into paper all this time.
